Messages and Calendar of Events & Activities - Week of June 1
Dear Island Trees School Community,
Please see the messages, as well as the calendar of events & activities below:
It’s Very Simple……
Sometimes the simplest things we do have the greatest impact… a thank you with a smile, holding the door for someone, or giving a compliment. These small acts mean more than we realize and can brighten the lives around us.
Parents often ask me, “What can I do to help my child succeed in school?” The answer is surprisingly simple: read. Reading to children is the single most important factor in school success. Such a small act, yet it has an extraordinary impact on academic growth.
The research is overwhelming -- children who are read to daily tend to do exceptionally well in school. Through read-alouds, they learn new vocabulary, build important concepts, and gain a wealth of knowledge. Learning builds layer by layer, much like the construction of a home. Without a strong foundation, the more advanced “frames” of learning have little to rest on. A solid reading foundation makes all future learning stronger and more meaningful.
Just as important, reading aloud fosters a love of learning. Children adore their parents and naturally follow their example. When you read to them, they not only hear stories - they feel valued, connected, and inspired. It strengthens the parent-child bond in ways that last a lifetime.
In short, reading to your children is one of life’s simplest gifts, and one that has an everlasting impact on their success in school - and beyond.
Demonstrated Interest – Another Strategy for College Admissions
For high school students beginning to explore colleges, it’s important to understand that many - though not all - colleges track demonstrated interest and factor it into their admissions decisions. For those schools that do, students are encouraged to actively show interest in a variety of ways.
As mentioned in an earlier message, students should make sure to sign in for college visits, whether in person or virtual. Attendance at these sessions is often tracked and used as a metric of interest - so it’s important to get credit by signing in.
Additionally, students should open emails from colleges they are interested in. After visiting a college or its website, students may start receiving communications from that school. Many colleges use advanced tracking systems to monitor email engagement and consider this a sign of student interest. Encourage your child to open and read these messages, especially if the school is on their list.
Some colleges also offer interviews as part of the admissions process. If your child is planning to apply and the opportunity is available, they should request an interview. This is another meaningful way to demonstrate interest.
Ultimately, colleges want to admit students who are genuinely interested in attending. Students who show strong interest are more likely to accept an offer of admission - something colleges closely track to improve their "yield," a metric that impacts their national rankings.
